Hello friends! It’s been a minute since I’ve given you a travel update. Let’s be honest though, if you know me well, you know I’m never on time for anything so, this shouldn’t come as a big shock to you. I was actually just waiting for Michigan’s winter weather to go away before I showed you these beautiful beach shots. I didn’t want to you to be disappointed when you looked outside and saw snow instead of sunshine. Let’s just tell ourselves that okay?
Anyway, being one with fair skin and red hair, the sun isn’t always my BFF. Therefore, a tropical beach getaway isn’t exactly my ideal vacation; however, the copious amounts of rum really helped. As you know, I am a travel advisor by day. This was just another casual business trip so, I did spend a lot of time “working”. By working, I mean spending the better part of my day touring various resorts in Punta Cana and La Romana. I know what you’re thinking but, I certainly got my steps in, so I’m calling that work! Rather than bore you with the play by play of my entire trip, I will leave you with some recommendations, in case you ever have the opportunity to visit the beautiful Dominican Republic.
Places to stay:
By far, my two favorite resorts I had the pleasure of visiting were Secrets Cap Cana and the Nickelodeon. Secrets Cap Cana is just simply classy and elegant and has the most gorgeous and spacious beach you ever did see. The Nickelodeon has everything you could possibly imagine. Their waterpark is the only aspect that is a little “in your face” Nickelodeon. The rest of the property is fairly subtle. I just fell in love!
Things to do:
The two coolest things I was able to do while I was there were, a day trip to Saona Island, and an afternoon at Scape Park. Saona Island is a deserted island, left untouched for the most part. Essentially, we took a party boat to get there and made pit stops to snorkel and swim at a sandbar. The rest of the day was spent having lunch on the island and relaxing on the beach, with rum in hand of course. Scape Park is a really cool place with a lot of different activities to choose from. While there, I did their zipline course, consisting of 12 ziplines, and jumped off a small ledge into a pool of naturally bright blue water.
Beverages of choice:
Rum. All the rum. But after that, you need to try their signature drink, Mamajuana, at least once. Mamajuana is a mixture of rum, red wine and honey that sits in a bottle with tree bark and spices. It sounds kind of weird but, it tastes similar to a mulled wine, except it isn’t served warm. Of course, every country has their basic beer. For the Dominican Republic, it’s Presidente. Personally, I would compare it, taste wise, to Heineken. .
It isn’t quite summer at home yet but I think we might be on the right track finally. Michigan should be as sunny as it was in these pictures in no time! Maybe you’re one of the lucky ones and are currently someplace warm for spring break! Maybe even Punta Cana! Which warm and sunny destinations are on your travel bucket list?
